DCC – Adult Careers Service

We give free and impartial information, advice and guidance about career opportunities, learning and employment to any Derbyshire residents aged 19 years and over and to those aged 18 who are not currently in education, employment or training.

The advice is government funded through the National Careers Service and provided by highly qualified staff. These career coaches are friendly, supportive and knowledgeable about all local learning and work opportunities.

As well as our usual face-to-face appointments, drop in sessions or group workshops, we can give advice and support in the following ways:

The following is a list of all the Access Points we currently have running. There’s no need to make an appointment, you can just drop in. A careers coach will be available to support you.

These are some of the sorts of advice and support we can give at a first session:

• advice and information on courses or training including how to get funding and further opportunities
• exploring volunteering and work experience opportunities across the county
• careers planning including help to understand the current labour market, identifying the skills you already have, new career paths and routes into employment
• how to write covering letters to gain the attention of employers
• how to write a CV or update an existing one
• tips on finding a new job, such as making the most of the government’s ‘find a job service, using social media and exploring the hidden labour market
• advice for writing an application form and relating it to a possible interview
• guidance on interview skills including tips on preparation and planning, types of interview and questions to expect

Everyone is offered further, personalised support after their initial appointment.
