Your chance to have say on cuts to local tip

RESIDENTS are being urged by Erewash Borough Council to take part in a public consultation about the local tip as a reduction in opening hours looms.

The household waste recycling centre on Ilkeston’s Manners Avenue is run by Derbyshire County Council, which was yesterday featured in a BBC1 national news bulletin about how it is grappling with budget shortfalls (Wednesday 1 November).

The authority says it wants to know what local people think about how cuts at the tip will be imposed.

Residents can choose between it being open on fewer days or for curtailed hours. Charges may be introduced for small businesses using the facility and fees levied for the disposal of certain materials including asbestos and tyres.

The county council says it is looking to save £1.75million from its waste management division. A spokesperson said: “Currently all materials are accepted for free at our recycling centres. However, like many councils across the country we are facing huge budget pressures.”

Councillor Joel Bryan, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Environment, said:

“The recycling centre in Manners Avenue is a key amenity in the borough and this is a vital opportunity for residents to provide input on what happens to it as cuts to local authority finances continue to bite.”

Ilkeston’s tip is one of nine the county council runs. It is currently open seven days a week from 8.30am to 6pm, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

People have until December 26 to complete an online questionnaire which can be found on the Derbyshire County Council website here:Proposed changes to recycling centres – Derbyshire County Council
